I want to let you in on a little secret.
At any moment of your life, you can make the decision to change. You can make the decision to challenge what you think, to challenge what others think of you, and most importantly, what roles society expects from you too.
Look, I’m not saying let’s all be anarchists. Quite the contrary, actually. But when we begin to challenge how a culture or society expects a certain gender to act, behave, and function, is when we begin to see the world through our own eyes.
Why are men typically perceived as “insensitive” and women as “emotional”? It’s not that we aren’t these things, but rather, it’s what cultural norms and society emphasizes, expects and encourages from both sexes.
Men are emotional beings, they just aren’t supported in mainstream society to express it. Women are strong and great leaders, but the roles that are placed on us today STILL involve getting our worth through clothes, makeup, and goodness gracious, having a partner who loves us!
Cue in music: DUN DUN DUN! Ladies, the role of a boyfriend or husband isn’t to complete us or make us feel whole. The role of a partner is to enhance our daily living, not mend it.
Your worth and empowerment comes from honoring YOUR needs. It comes from self-expression of YOUR choosing, not what’s ‘expected’ from you.
As a teenager, I struggled A LOT with my own self-image, particularly the need to constantly wear makeup. Every morning I used to run to the mirror and see what new pimple grew over night, how flawed I felt because of it, and how quickly I needed to cover it up. It got to the point where I became so used to my face covered in makeup that I couldn’t even recognize my washed, unmasked self.
My confidence was reliant on makeup covering my flaws.
So if you’re anything like I was in my teens and early 20’s, I promise this challenge will help you become more confident in the long run. And yes, It’s going to feel super uncomfortable and scary at first, but with practice, you’ll begin to shift how you feel from the inside out.
